DevLog 2
Welcome Back!
This is the second complete week of development on Ascent, and here is what we have completed so far:
Monday, September 25th:
- We met to work on the creative brief and practice our pitch presentation for Wednesday. We were able to consistently achieve ~4 minutes, 20 seconds length, which is prefect.
- We added multiple features to the game such as climbing movement, swinging without rotating the characters, and adding speed while swinging.
- The CS team added an animation to the character while climbing using the character rig designed during the game jam
Tuesday, September 26th:
- We polished our demo and created a Mac and Windows build which we published to this page.
- Lorenzo modeled Angelina's concept art. There was conversation on the various drafts, and tweaking various details to match the initial concept art.
Wednesday, September 27th:
- We finalized and published our creative brief and pitch presentation
- We presented our pitch presentation
- Feedback has been collected and the main points we'd like to highlight are these:
- Cute concept and the story, mechanics, and players being connected is endearing
- Movement is hard to conceptualize. How is it integrated into the environment? How do we force players to use climbing over swinging?
- What makes us stand out from other similar games? Capitalize on our unique elements
- How can we transition our demo into a more 3D environment?
Thursday, September 28th and Friday, September 29th:
- Based off of the feedback, we decided to remove the climbing mechanism. To become more 3D and flesh out the relationship between our mechanics and the environment to force certain behaviours from players, we decided to lean more into a platforming genre as a result, adding the mechanics of walking and throwing to supplement the main swinging mechanic. To capitalize on our unique elements, we're leaning into the stamina mechanism and 3D environment.
Saturday September 30th and Sunday October 1st:
- Controller integration has begun for the game to be playable by keyboard or controller.
- Lorenzo finished final renders, along with snow textures on the player characters to add as the players ascend higher throughout the levels. The render for the second player character has a helmet!
Next Steps:
- We will be implementing our ideas from the feedback
- Our Proof of Concept video will be our focus for next week
- We will also be brainstorming more assets that will be needed for our artists and musicians
