DevLog 3

Hey there!
Check in on our third complete week of Ascent development. Fleshing out our mechanics and environment for our proof of concept was the name of the game this week.

Monday, October 2nd:
- Our weekly meeting took place, where we outlined what we wanted to have done for our PoC
- We finalized our idea on how to incorporate 3D elements by leaning into the platformer game genre. This will help with using level design to control player movement
- We started development on the tasks we outlined in the day's meeting

Tuesday, October 3rd:
- Completion of our main mechanics for our PoC!
- Level design was completed
- UI improvements were made to look cleaner and differentiated towards our game's image
- Checkpoints were implemented
- Movement was further fleshed out, with throwing, grabbing, walking, and jumping, contributing to making our main mechanic: swinging, work

Wednesday, October 4th:
- Finished our mechanics for our PoC and put it all together!
- Recorded and uploaded our PoC

Thursday, October 5th:
- Met and discussed what we needed to do for our Game Design Document
- Discussed mechanics we wanted to work on and develop for Tech Demo

Saturday, October 8th:
- Discussed with our art team what we wanted to implement for our first level
- Discussed with our music team the feel we are going for with our main theme

Oct 5th - Oct 9th (Coding):

  • Modified the movement code to make movement snappier
  • Made movement rotate the character to face where they are moving
  • Added better swinging mechanics
  • Added a yank mechanic so that when the player is on the ground they can yank themselves towards their friend
  • Added code that stopped swinging if the grabbing player lets go
  • Add proximity check for throwing
  • Added jumping at the end of a swing
  • Added boosting yourself while swinging

This coming week we plan on:
- Writing up our GDD and finishing up the mechanics for the tech demo
    - This includes controller input and an iteration for stamina
- Continue to discuss the assets we need for our first level and implement them into our level
